State veterinary board facility rosters: what 14 boards actually publish

If you verify US veterinary practices against state board records, the format and completeness of those records vary from state to state. We downloaded or queried the public facility rosters of 14 state veterinary boards between 25 and 30 September 2026 and documented what each one publishes. These rosters list facilities (premises), not individual veterinarians. Twelve of the 14 are full published rosters; Ohio's is a partial extract, and South Carolina's is limited to registered emergency clinics. This page reports the record counts, how current the records are, and what fields each board publishes. That shows where a board roster is enough on its own and where it needs a supplement.

Our data

Contribution: first-party data, derived analysis, downloadable dataset

  • Collected: Downloaded or queried the public facility roster of 14 state veterinary boards between 25 and 30 September 2026; raw copies retained, with sha256 recorded for 10 of the 14 files; one row per facility record. One row per board, documented from the retained roster files and their retrieval metadata (source URL, retrieval date) and from which fields are populated in the loaded rows (aggregated 25 September 2026, 29 September 2026, 30 September 2026).
  • Published: 62 aggregate figures; each group meets its dataset's minimum size (1 or 5 source records) and smaller groups are withheld.
  • Compared with: all records in the same roster from the same state board roster.
  • Method: the exact queries, row counts and thresholds are in the methodology.
  • Computed: 16 derived figures (top-3 and top-5 totals and shares, group totals and shares, remaining counts) from the published figures. Each is a dataset row with its formula, inputs and expression, so it can be recomputed.
  • Tracked: in our source-fact ledger since 4 October 2026; no changes recorded yet.
  • Sources: the source manifest (JSON) lists the 14 sources behind the figures (state veterinary boards), each with its public URL, retrieval date, status and the reason any is left out. A card's or table's Source link goes to that source's own page.
  • Reproduce it: download the data as CSV or JSON (78 rows; variables: facility records per state board roster, facility records across full state rosters, share of records with a current status, six rosters that list other statuses, roster records by status class, roster records by license kind, roster records that list a city, roster contents by state board, roster access method, lapsed records in the roster, street addresses in the roster, expiration dates in the roster, derived figure; license CC BY 4.0).

How many facility records each board roster holds

The counts below are published facility records of any status, one row per facility, from each board's public roster (Vettica board roster review, retrieved 25–30 September 2026; the queries are in the methodology linked under Our data).

The figures are heavily concentrated at the top. California (4,744), Florida (3,127) and North Carolina (1,492) together hold 9,363 facility records, and adding Oregon (1,283) and Arizona (1,125) brings the top five to 11,771. The nine boards outside that top five account for 4,255 records combined (including Ohio's partial extract), fewer than California alone. Twelve of the 14 rosters are full published rosters totalling 15,927 facility records; the top three full rosters account for 58.8% of those and the top five for 73.9%. Ohio's 87 records are a partial extract rather than a full roster, and South Carolina's 12 records cover registered emergency clinics only. The remaining 37 of 51 US jurisdictions (50 states and DC) are not included in this comparison.

How current the roster records are

Six of the 14 rosters mix current records with records of another status: Arizona's lists 3 applicant (pending) premises, and the California, Nevada, Oregon and New Mexico rosters and Ohio's partial extract list expired, forfeited, closed, inactive, lapsed or archived records. For these six, the table gives the share of records with a current status; the Veterinary Data Glossary defines license status (Vettica board roster review, retrieved 25–30 September 2026).

The spread here is wide. Arizona's roster is almost entirely current at 99.7%, with 3 of 1,125 records outside that status. California publishes lapsed records alongside current ones: 617 of its 4,744 records (87% current) are not current. Ohio's partial extract sits at 74.7%, with 22 of 87 records outside. Nevada and Oregon both sit at 55.7%, meaning 235 of 531 and 568 of 1,283 records respectively do not carry a current status (in Oregon, 566 are closed, expired or lapsed and 2 have no status). New Mexico is the outlier at 37%, with 645 of 1,024 records not carrying a current status. The other eight boards in this review are not in this comparison because there is nothing to split: Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina and West Virginia list only current records, and Maryland and North Carolina publish no status at all.

What each board's roster publishes

The table documents roster format and fields, one row per board, from the retained roster files, their retrieval metadata and the fields populated in the loaded rows (Vettica board roster review, retrieved 25–30 September 2026).

Status coverage splits three ways. Seven of the 14 rosters list only current or pending records, five publish lapsed, closed or expired records alongside current ones, and two (Maryland and North Carolina) publish no status field for any record. Street addresses appear in 10 of the 14 rosters; Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and New Mexico publish none. License expiration dates appear in 9 of the 14 rosters; Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina publish none.

Decisions this data supports

For teams verifying practices at scale, three conclusions follow directly from the figures.

First, bulk-friendly formats are the minority. Only five of the 14 boards publish a downloadable file, and one more publishes an open-data layer. If your workflow needs a file you can load, California, Missouri, West Virginia, Arizona and Florida are the boards where that works directly. Maryland's open-data layer can also be downloaded, but its rows were last updated on 22 July 2025. The other eight publish through search portals or PDF lists.

Second, a record count is not a verified-current count. Nevada and Oregon each carry 55.7% current records, and New Mexico 37%, because those boards publish lapsed records alongside current ones. A verification workflow that treats every roster row as an active facility will count records that do not carry a current status: 617 in California, 235 in Nevada, 568 in Oregon and 645 in New Mexico. Where a status field exists, filter on it. Where it does not (Maryland and North Carolina), the roster does not show a facility's current standing, so confirm it with the board. On the rosters that list only current records, a facility that is missing from the list is not confirmed as current.

Third, address coverage determines whether a roster can anchor a location match. Ten of 14 boards publish street addresses. For the other four, the records we loaded carry the facility name plus, at most, a city (Kansas, for 521 of 677 records) or a county (North Carolina); the Kentucky and New Mexico records carry neither, and Kentucky's public results also suppress permit numbers. Matching those records to a specific site needs a second source that has the street address.

Limits of this data

These counts describe what the boards publish, not the market. If you need practice locations beyond board rosters, see our veterinary chain profiles and locations. A roster's facility record count is a count of published records of any status. Where a board publishes lapsed records (California, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico), its record count is larger than its count of current records. New Mexico's 1,024 records include 42 shelter licenses, and we left out the animal crematories listed in Arizona's sheet. "Full published roster" means the board publishes its whole facility roster publicly; it does not mean the roster covers every practice in the state. Ohio's 87 records are explicitly a partial extract, and South Carolina's 12 records cover registered emergency clinics only, so neither supports a general facility count.

The 37 jurisdictions outside these 14 are not covered here, and no property is claimed for them either way. For which of all 51 jurisdictions license veterinary facilities at all, see our state veterinary facility license registry availability page. That page reports its own checks of board websites on 28 September 2026; its Arizona, Maryland and West Virginia classifications and its Kansas count were corrected on 4 October 2026 to match the rosters retrieved for this page.

Everything here is a snapshot from retrievals between 25 and 30 September 2026, and some files are older than the retrieval: Kansas's PDF is dated 9 September 2026 and Maryland's open-data rows were last updated on 22 July 2025. Check the boards' own pages for current data before relying on any single count.

How to use the dataset

The CSV and JSON files hold 78 rows: one row per aggregate group (each published figure), plus one row per derived figure with its formula and inputs (62 observed, 16 derived). The rows behind each group (the collected source rows) are not published.

Columns: id (row id (observed rows r01..., derived figures d01...)), kind (observed or derived), entity, attribute, scenario, value, number (the figure as a plain number), unit, scope (the scope, or a derived figure's input row ids), input_price_scope, scenario_scope, formula (a derived figure's formula in words), expression (its arithmetic over the input figures), source_owner, source_url, observed_at, fixture.

Variables: Facility records per state board roster; Facility records across full state rosters; Share of records with a current status, six rosters that list other statuses; Roster records by status class; Roster records by license kind; Roster records that list a city; Roster contents by state board; Roster access method; Lapsed records in the roster; Street addresses in the roster; Expiration dates in the roster; Derived figure. Data as of 30 September 2026. License: CC BY 4.0.

Each observed row's source_url is its public source (the page the data came from) or, for a figure built from several sources, the section of the source manifest that lists them; derived rows list their input rows in scope.

To use it, filter attribute to the figure you need, sort by number, and cite the row's source_owner and observed_at. Recompute any derived row from its expression and the input rows its scope lists.
